Trail de l'Absinthe, swiss

I spent the week before the race in Chamonix for some preparation training. The weather was awful, cold and wet. I went up to Planpraz; the dirt track was fine, but next to it the snow up to my shoulder high. I could not believe it, it was the 8th of June. It felt as spring hasn’t even started in the Alpes. The training was disappointing, as my ascending was for my standards too slow. I was also tired from work commitments and used the week to rest more then I planned. Sometimes one has to l...

Raidlight Trans Aubrac - water, mud and snow

The last race information, a few days before the race, stated that due to ground conditions there was a diversion between St Come d’Olt and Languiole and that the ground conditions were wet. I was not too concerned, as all races this year were in some muddy conditions. I would never have imagined what I would encounter during this year’s 106 km Trans Aubrac ... The weather forecast was for a dry, sunny, partially cloudy day and up to 14 degrees. Pleasant conditions for running. My objectiv...

Ecotrail Paris 2013 – a successful run!

Saturday 16 March 2013 – St Quentin-en-Yvelines, a very cold day. What a difference to last year’s sunny 23 degree Celsius warm spring day. I tried to keep myself warm and was glad when the race started. The aim for the first 22 km was to have a steady pace not to go below 5min per km. I did not want to go to hard and have enough energy to attack after Buc. I was overtaken by a few girls but kept my cool and kept my pace. I learned when I came into Buc that I was in 7th position. For me ...

Kingsbury 10k & County to Capital 45

18 weeks after I broke my shoulder and three weeks after the second surgery I was standing on the start line for the Kingsbury 10K. I was ready to race, ready not to complete but to compete… August 2012, 4 days before the TDS, the main race of the year: I was running in Les Praz, on the flat at speed and must have tripped over my own feet. I fell straight onto my face and hurt my left shoulder. I tried to carry on for another 2 days but the pain did not ease off. An x-ray revealed a fracture a...

Trail Verbier St Bernard

Trail Verbier St Bernard (TVSB) 113km D+7000m, Saturday 7 July 2012 I arrived in Chamonix one week before the race to spend some time downhill training and also to relax before the big race. However, things did not go quite to plan… I woke up in the early hours of Sunday morning with gastro intestinal problems. At 10 in the morning I struggled to get up to Plan Praz hoping to see my friend, who took part in the Mont Blanc marathon, arriving. It took me 1 hour 45 min to make the 1000m ascent...

Metropolmarathon Fuerth

Visiting my mum including taking part in a marathon seemed to be a great idea for a perfect weekend in Germany. Based on recent running performances the goal was to have an attempt on 3hr 15min. However, my trainer told me if things don’t work out to do my best and not to wear myself out as Verbier in two weeks time is the more important race. He wished me a good training run... I arrived in Germany on Thursday, 21 June 2012. The weather was very hot and sultry. Trying to imagine running a mar...

Trail du Gypaete

For my first race this year in the Alpes I chose the Trail du Gypaete, 71km and D+4020m. The start was at Nancy sur Cluses and the finish at Thyez. Although Chamonix is not that far away, this is an area in the Haute Savoie I did not know. Following the Ecotrail where I the objective was to see how the speed training over the winter went, the Gypaete appeared to be an ideal race to see how much I did improve in strength and endurance especially ascending mountains. Saturday, 2 June, 4.30 am Thye...

Lichfield Half Marathon

Lichfield Half Marathon Sunday 6 May 2012 A race in my home city! No flights, hotel, sleeping in my own bed before the race. Perfect! I missed the first edition of the Lichfield half marathon last year as I was on holiday. I did not want to miss the second edition! When I woke up on Sunday morning I did not feel like racing. It was similar to the feeling I had when I ran Ashby. The focus was on the next race: after Ashby the Ecotrail in Paris and four weeks after Lichfield the Gypaete. I als...

2012 Paris Ecotrail 80km +1500m & Ashby 20mile road race

On Sunday 18 March I took part in the Ashby 20, a 20 mile (32km) road race on an undulating course. My trainer agreed for me to take part in this race, just 6 days before the Ecotrail under the condition that I do this as a final long training run, at tempo but to keep below lactate threshold. I had a decent run, setting a personal best at 2:30:53. However, I was not happy as I did the second 10 miles 0.3km/hr. slower than the first and there was no need for this. I should have kept my speed at ...

Thames Trot 4 February 2012

The Thames Trot is a 80km trail race (flat) south of Oxford. The first race of the season and a good indicator how the winter training went. I did a lot of training in December and over the Christmas and New Year period with the aim to increase my cruising speed. I also did a lot of conditioning exercises. Mid January and February is madness at work 16th and 23 January week I worked 70 hours per week. The week before the race about 40. Weekend training in those weeks was reduced as I was tired. ...

Brecon Beacon Ultra & Kingsbury 10k

The Brecon Beacons is a hilly area in Mid-Wales. The terrain is comparable to the one in the Trans Aubrac, Midi Pyrenees. On Saturday 19 November I took part in the Brecon Becon Ultra 74km (2* 37km laps) +1700m, selfsufficient (only water was provided). The start was at 7.30am at Talybont. It was a dull day, cloudy and misty about 10 degrees. The first 4km were along a canal. I was running well at a steady pace. The first climb up Tor y Foel (550m) was 436m up over meadow, more or less str...

Trail Verbier - St Bdernard 110 boucle

Following the Trans Aubrac I took it easy for a couple of weeks and then continued my training in preparation for the TDS. On the 18th of June I ran the Skogsmaraton (forest marathon) in Oslo. A challenging marathon course, of road, which I finished with a personal best of 3hrs 51min. The next race on the calendar was the Trail Verbier 110 boucle. I got increasingly nervous two weeks before he race as I had too much going on at work. I was concerned that I did nto get enough sleep to an would...

Paris Ecotrail 2011

Paris Ecotrail 26 March 2011 Bonjour felicitation a tous les finishers du team Raidlight. Bravo!  Saturday lunchtime 12.30. 1891 runners from 37 nations were ready to take part in the 4th edition of the Paris Ecotrail. I was excited as I was looking forward to a race in the spring sunshine. My first race in 14 month in dry weather… I thought! My objective was to beat my prior year time by at least 1 hour. The first 22 km from Saint-Quentin en Yvelines to Buc are pleasant. The fi...

Ashby 20mile road race

On Sunday 13 March 2010 I took part in the Ashby de la Zouche (East Midlands, GB0 20 Mile (32km) road race on a slightly undulating course.   I had a bit of a cold last week and took training very easy. I felt fine on Sunday morning and ready to race. The weather was horrible, cold  and raining. Typical 'meteo en Angleterre'.  865 runners took part in the 20 mile  road race. It took me some time to settle down about 10km. I felt tired. I passed the 10 mile mark at 1hr17min. ...
